Service Learning : Human Rights Society intern
Much of the work I did with the Human Rights Society was research for the organization. In addition to research, I also helped plan an event we held last month that brought multiple panelists together to discuss the legalization and decriminalization of prostitution. The artifact I attached is a photo of me with the founder of HRS, Alex Sum, and my fellow interns this quarter. Alex reached out to me to ask if I would be able to continue to help out with the organization next quarter; I am excited to say that I will continue to work with him and HRS. **Update: we have founded a UW chapter of HRS and are planning our first event for the end of May, 2015!
The panel/debate HRS put on relates well to the theme of “Safe Spaces” that we have discussed in class (and is the topic that my group focused on for our final presentation). This panel allowed open discussion between individuals with opposing views on the topic of prostitution. This debate was held to shed light on human trafficking, which is closely related to prostitution (and the main method of slavery/human trafficking in some countries) as well as provide a safe space for discussion for those who are interested in learning more.

I am very glad I had the opportunity to help coordinate this event and learn so much more about human rights/human rights violations around the world. My involvement with HRS has helped spark my passion for getting involved on campus and helping spread awareness of important issues. HRS will be hosting a Film Festival next spring, which I encourage everyone to attend! For more information about Human Rights Society & upcoming events, go to: http://humanrightssociety.org!
