Assignment Five - Portfolio Autumn Quarter Statement
I cannot believe that the end of my first quarter here at UW is coming to an end. At the beginning of Fall quarter I had no idea what I wanted to study or what career I wanted to pursue. I came into UW knowing only that I was fairly interested in biology, literature, and philosophy and that was about it. In these past 8-9 weeks, I have already learned that I love the field of Anthropology and that I will likely major in it.
Something that surprised me this year was my new love of Chemistry! I thought I would take Chemistry 142 and hate it, but instead I found myself enjoying Chemistry a lot (except for the labs). In high school I took chemistry but had no idea how interesting and fun it could be. I am currently signed up for Chemistry 152 in the winter, in quiz section CL.
Something I learned about in Honors 100 that I would like to investigate further is studying abroad. Right now I am in the process of applying to an honors exploration seminar in Rome. There are many different study abroad programs that interest me, but based on timing, the exploration seminar in Rome seems like a good fit for me.
Something about UW that was very different than what I expected is the Greek system. I thought that the sororities would be full of the stereotypical dumb blondes. After going to Greek preview and rushing, now I realize that each sorority is a collection of many different types of girls. Each sorority has a lot of history as well as high standards of each of their members.
My goals for my first year of college are: to maintain a cumulative 3.5+ GPA throughout freshman year, get involved with clubs on campus, and have some leadership involvement. By the end of my time at UW, my goal is to be a double major – in Biology and (Medical) Anthropology. In addition, I would like to continue my involvement with Delta Zeta, KSA leadership, and would absolutely love to be accepted to UW’s medical school.
Something I am proud of:
Earning a 3.8 on my first freshman English paper. The prompt was to write a philosophy paper that would make Ann Baker proud. Originally I was worried that the prompt was too broad for me to successfully address. My first draft was definitely a rough draft. After hearing the critiques of my classmates I made major edits and earned an A! I included/uploaded this philosophy paper as an artifact under Freshman Year.
