philosophy 120: Introduction to logic
professor: tyler hildebrand
This class was much more challenging than I anticipated. Having taken philosophy in high school and loving my philosophy unit in Frances's WWK class, I figured this class would deal with a lot of theory and discussion. Little did I know that learning the basics of logic is like learning a new language! Our class focused on learning the language of sentential logic for the first half of the quarter, which involves a lot of symbols and truth tables. Understanding the semantics of sentential logic was a challenge for me, and forced me to think critically. Although it was much more demanding and time-consuming than I thought it would be, I still enjoyed how much this class emphasized the importance of truly understanding concepts and critical thinking!
Notes on the professor and overall experience: Tyler is a pretty laid-back instructor. He talks very colloquially with the class during lecture and will crack jokes (most of them involving the Mariners, Nickelback, and/or the Seahawks). Although it is not very difficult to pass the class (~2.0-3.0), I'd say you should expect to dedicate a good chunk of time each week to study for the weekly exams if you want to receive a 3.5 or higher!
