English 205 Honors: What We Know and How We Know It
Professor: Frances McCue
This interdisciplinary honors class is offered specifically to incoming freshman and is only available in the fall. There are only ~25 students in the class, and you should definitely try to be one of those people! You will be exposed to many different styles of writing, and if you're lucky you will even get to hear an excerpt from Frances's memoir! Frances is very patient and is constantly giving our class helpful information, whether it is about upcoming events on campus, opportunities to get involved in the community, or recommendations for local restaurants and musical venues. The people I have taken this class with have remained good friends.
Notes on the professor and overall experience: Frances McCue was an absolutely wonderful professor. She helped teach me how to focus my paper on the given audience and encouraged me to take risks in my writing. I really appreciated how open she was with the class. She helped develop a classroom atmosphere that was accepting and open and allowed me to read my poetry out loud in front of other people for the first time in my life. I believe my writing improved because of her class. I also practiced many different styles of writing - during the course I wrote a philosophy paper, a short memoir excerpt, and a children's story explaining a complex idea (Dr. Kelly's Six Rules of Thumb).
